Head Coach Renee Jimenez has announced the 2009-10 Cal State Monterey Bay women’s basketball schedule. The challenging schedule will feature four opponents from the 2009 NCAA Tournament, UC San Diego, Humboldt State, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and Northwest Nazarene.
"Coming off a record-breaking season for our program, we are ready to face another tough CCAA conference," Jimenez said. "We have loaded our schedule with tough non-conference opponents, including paying NCAA Division I Santa Clara University at home at the Kelp Bed.
"It is a game our fans will not want to miss."
The Otters will open the season unofficially with an exhibition game at home on Nov. 3 against NCAA Division I Santa Clara University.
The Otters begin the regular season on the road, competing in the Phoenix Inn & Suites Invitational on Nov. 20 and 21, matching up against Northwest Nazarene and host Western Oregon.
CSUMB will jump right into conference play on Dec. 4 and 5, taking on Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State receptively. The Otters opened their CCAA season last year with a 50-46 upset over Chico State who was favored to repeat as regular season champions.
"Our five returning seniors, along with a host of talented newcomers are poised to make a championship run this season," Jimenez said.
Under the helm of first-year coach Jimenez, the 2008-09 Cal State Monterey Bay women’s basketball squad came out strong, going from 3-24 to 11-15, which made them the 13th most improved team in the country. The team notched eight more wins than the 2007-08 team, resulting in not only a program record but one of the nation's top turnarounds for a Division II women's basketball program.
