Head Coach Rob Bishop has announced the 2009-10 Cal State Monterey Bay men’s basketball schedule, which features the 2009 NCAA National Tournament Runner-up, 12 regular season home games and a trip to Washington.
"I am very happy with this year’s basketball schedule," Bishop said. "We will have very short but challenging pre season slate of games. "
The Otters will compete in two exhibition games on the road, first taking on the University of the Pacific on Nov. 11 in Stockton and then a match-up against University of San Francisco on Nov. 7.
CSUMB opens the regular season at home on Nov. 15, hosting Academy of Art University at the Otter Sports Center. Last year, the Otters defeated the Urban Knights, 73-56, in their inaugural season.
CSUMB ventures north to compete in the Sodexho Tip-Off Classic the following weekend. The Otters tip off against a Western Washington squad that won 21 games last year on Nov 20 before taking on host Seattle Pacific on Nov. 21.
"Playing in the Seattle Pacific tournament will match us up against two teams that I anticipate to be ranked in the top 10 in the West region to start the year," Bishop said.
CSUMB will then play six of their next seven games at home. The Otters open conference play against Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State on Dec. 4 and 5 respectively. Last year, the Otters swept their opening CCAA weekend with wins over the Warriors (87-84) and Wildcats (80-68).
The Otters will wrap up their non-conference road schedule against NCAA Division I Long Beach State on Dec. 12, playing at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach.
"With Cal State East Bay joining the CCAA this year, our preseason schedule will be two games shorter," Bishop said. "Our new guys will need to develop that much faster to really help us in league play."
After a short holiday break, CSUMB will continue its CCAA schedule by hosting conference rival San Francisco State on Dec. 29.
"Once again our league will be very competitive from top to bottom making for very exciting games week in and week out," Bishop said. "With a mix of good young talent and good returning players I am very excited to get this season underway."
On Feb. 23, the Otters will host the 2009 NCAA National Runner-Up Cal Poly Pomona.
CSUMB closed out the 2008-09 campaign at 16-14 and 8-12 in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play. After defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills, 79-73, in the first round of the CCAA Championships, the Otters posted a 54-49 overtime victory over Cal Poly Pomona in the semi-finals before falling to Cal State San Bernardino 80-78 in the finals.
