Think Science

Today we will chat about words; their history, their common usage, and their evolution within language. My inspiration from this comes from my eldest, dearest darling of a child (insert whatever brand of personal sarcasm you prefer here), the young Mr. Think Science, Jr.

Random Tangents

I was raised with the belief that marriage is something important between two people who love each other. You stick together through good times and bad… and all that other stuff you say during your vows. Throughout school a majority of my friends had parents who were divorced, on their second marriage, going through a divorce, or simply together because getting a divorce was too expensive.

Financially Speaking

I know that New Year’s Resolutions can be a hot topic; you either make them or you don’t. Personally, I think we should all take stock of our lives once in a while, and January is as good a time as any. I’ve got a couple of suggestions if there are financial goals in your future.

Health and Wellness

Breast cancer and how to prevent it is a concern for us all. I've noticed there is very little focus on what we can do to help prevent it. Rather the focus is on finding a cure by funding pharmaceutical companies. I hope someday a cure is actually revealed, but in the meantime, let's talk about the things you can do for yourself so you can actively contribute to your own health and well-being.

Rock Star Marketing

I got a call from the Entertainment Committee Chair, Jay Cohen, asking for help with Marina's 35th Anniversary celebration. I was honored to help and am thrilled that he asked me and my band, Sirena, to play for the event on August 28, 2010. Awesome!

Business Matters

Where do you go if you want to hire a contractor or architect for a construction job? My first stop has always been to talk to a few friends to get their recommendations. Then there is looking at ads in the Yellow Pages. But were you aware that we have a wonderful resource herein Marina, the Builders Exchange of the Central Coast?

When Science Has it all Wrong

It is human nature to look around us and try to make sense of what we see. So, of course, when observers of the natural world long ago realized that there were female crab spiders that came in different colors, they wondered why. It appeared that yellow spiders lived in yellow wildflowers and white spiders lived in white wildflowers. Therefore, the obvious conclusion, color differences must be for camouflage. Yellow spiders resting on yellow flowers are practically invisible – to us.

The goal of energy independence and a clean environment coupled with prosperity enjoys near-universal support.

Ahoy Mariner Fans!!!

I trust everyone had a great Thanksgiving weekend or as I call it “Fat Turkey Day”. My mini-vacation took me to Fresno where I spent time with family and friends. The food is always good. Although I missed by family by Sunday I was ready to come home. However, coming home to Marina meant going back to school. I can deal with the holidays, the shopping and Christmas, but finals…AHHH!!!

Fortuitous Encounters

Rami has been my constant companion for the past 2 ½ years. He’s my loyal friend and confidant, never far from my thoughts. Enthusiastic, brave, a connoisseur of life, he loves sports, especially Frisbee. One recent Saturday morning we walked the beautiful curve of California coastline called Carmel Beach. I would throw the Frisbee. Rami would run, leap, or dive for it. We meandered and played this way, making our way in misty grey fog toward pristine Pebble Beach before others had picked up their first morning coffee.

Hard Hitting Girl Quarter Back

Our Seaside Raiders Youth Football (Monterey Bay Youth Football League) has a girl as a quarter back first year playing she just turned 9 in September. Her leadership and determination to be the best has lead the team to the Championship playoffs this upcoming weekend. She avg at least 1 touchdown per game. She throws the football 15-20 yards for successful passes. EMT are ready for her games. EMT's are called out to the field at least once per game to check on her opponents due to her hard hits. She is the team's offense running back, quarter back, for defense she plays line backer, defense end, punt return and kick return. She ran the ball back yesterday 40 yard for a touchdown in the playoffs. The Seaside Raider Jr. Pee Wee's team won that game 20 - 6 against Watsonville.

Business Matters

Marina has a variety of different types of businesses, everything from sole proprietors to mega corporations. We have businesses that are home-based and those that require 1000's of square feet for their operations. We have businesses that provide direct services while others are light industry. What could all these diverse businesses have in common? They all bring jobs and revenue to the City of Marina.

McCall in Marina

Do you have a vision for Marina? Everyone should. I have great hopes and dreams for the City of Marina. The people that live in Marina are special and unique. Living, working and visiting different cities, one can see the difference. Most often, walking around Marina you can see people smiling, greeting one another.

Letters

Over 80 (!) volunteers helped with set-up, serving, and cleanup, including girl scouts, boy scouts, and many individuals from different service organizations. On that beautiful day, everything came off with true thanksgiving and grace. A lovely Thanksgiving Church Service was offered and attended by many before the meal was served.

All The World’s A Stage

There were concerns that by placing personal information in a Facebook account, privacy may be compromised, and there may be a higher risk of identity theft.

The Science of Facebook?

After writing about YouTube and Twitter last week you knew I’d have to get to Facebook eventually. A recent study about to be published in the journal Psychological Science has revealed something I find intrinsically fascinating – that Facebook profiles actually capture people’s true personalities.
