More Than Four Thousand Pencils
That’s how many
pencils your Marina Service Clubs collected last weekend in front of
Wal-Mart. The Kiwanis club of Marina, Marina Rotary, the Lions Club of
Marina, the Marina Volunteer Association and Yielded Vessels Ministries
held a school supplies drive and collected the 4100 pencils, 41 reams of
copy paper, 300 folders, 161 boxes of crayons, 400 glue sticks, 445
journals, Kleenex, hand sanitizer, scissors and a whole lot more. The
donations from the generous people of Marina filled more than 10
barrels, and they also donated more than $600.00 in cash to be used to
purchase even more! The Kiwanis club inventoried and sorted the supplies
at their regular Tuesday night meeting, and the first deliveries to the
schools took place on Wednesday.
In addition to holding the school supply drive, each service group will partner with a school for the year. The partnerships will include help with fundraisers, community outreach, help with projects and joining the school PTA. The Rotary club will partner with Marina High and Learning For Life, the Lions will partner with Marina High, the MVA will partner with Marina Vista, Yielded Vessels Ministries will partner with J.C. Crumpton, and the Kiwanis club will partner with both Los Arboles and Olson.
Kiwanis club Past-President Tom Bailey, and member Giselle Young delivered the first load of supplies to Los Arboles on Wednesday afternoon. Assistant Principal Mr. Cullen was delighted at how much
stuff was delivered as box after box was carried in. Assisting with the unloading were Builders Club President Samantha Bailey and Treasurer Hayley Young. They also helped with the sorting and inventory the night before. The Builders Club is a service club at Los Arboles sponsored by the Kiwanis club. They are very active, and can’t wait to hold their first meeting of the school year to decide on service projects for this year.
They made the second delivery to Ione Olson Principal Joanne Vanderhorst. She was astonished at how much they brought in. She had big hugs for everyone. She was excited to partner with Kiwanis and is looking forward to a great year.
In case you missed the opportunity to donate supplies at Wal-Mart, it’s not too late. Rabobank Vice President and Branch Manager Renee Bailey has set up a "School Supply Donation Station" in the lobby and it will stay through the end of August. At the Chamber Mixer held Wednesday night, she gave raffle tickets to everyone who brought school supplies. The winners received canvas shopping bags filled with Rabobank goodies, and the supplies will be delivered in September.
