Marina - Castroville - Moss Landing - Seaside

Ahoy Mariner Fans!

Laura Alvarez

We have set sail and our course is full speed ahead. Time seems to be going by so fast!! We have already had Back to School Night, Our Back to School Dance and our first football scrimmage of the year. So much is still ahead. Life is speeding by fast too. Seniors are gearing up for college applications, scholarships, rings, caps and gowns, portraits, its soooo much!!! I find myself overwhelmed if it wasn’t for the support of my family, friends and community.

Community is very important. I can remember as a young girl following my mom to meetings. I didn’t always know what they were about but we went together. We were always involved in doing something. It may have been a meeting about an event, teaching a class, a committee, a class at school or volunteering at a booth. I asked her, “Why don’t we just stay home?” She replied, “Then, how would we be serving our Community?” I wanted to stay home and watch TV. I asked, “Why can’t somebody else do it?” She said, “We are Somebody Else.” I have always been told that stewardship and community service cannot always be left to other people. Sometimes we have to get up and do it ourselves. Marina High School is my community!!! The students, the teachers, and the administration they are all Our Community!!! When you get that phone call to volunteer don’t just leave it to Somebody Else…take the plunge. It’s a great way to meet people, know what’s happening, and teach your children to be involved by being involved yourselves!!!

Back to School Night at Marina High was held August 20 and it was great to see so many parents in attendance. We got there a little late and the presentation by Mr. Schilling was already underway. He presented the plan for the school year and a calendar of events. Our Parent Teacher Student Association also presented the budget for the school year. The PTSA is run by an all volunteer membership and is funded by the donations and fund raisers supported by our community. The budget was voted by the General Association in attendance and approved. After gathering in the Multi-Use room we were all invited to visit the classrooms and meet the teachers. This was all done by the bell system. As it rang we went to each period as if it were a school day. Mr. Silva gave a riveting presentation of 7th period Civics…Bravo!!!

The Senior class of MHS sponsored the Back to School Dance, Friday, August 20. All classes were invited to attend. It was a fun to see everyone in one place and not have to rush off to class. We had some electrical issues the messed with the DJ and his music. It caused a delay in the dancing, but not the fun. Most of the time were hanging out at our tables, laughing, kidding around. Yearbook committee was taking pictures and many of us hammed it up for the camera. They managed to get some shy folks out of there shells for a brief moment (cant wait to see yearbook now). We are looking forward to more social events…I think Homecoming will be the next one. We will keep you posted.

Mariner Football season is here!!! On one of the most beautiful Saturday afternoons Marina has ever had we gathered at the Marina High School football field. It was just a scrimmage, but what a turnout. Our Mariner team gave us a preview of what’s to come this year. The Calvary Chapel High School team came to play. They brought their own entourage of support as well. Our Team was awesome!!! It may have been just a practice game for them but they did it so well. This is our third year playing 8 Man Football and our team never disappoints. They play with heart. They go out their and for the love of the game play for themselves and their teammates, MHS, and families. The MPUSD budget cuts have really hurt them a lot. Money, we are told, is just not there. Many of the families are paying out of pocket for their boys to play. All games are home games because all sports transportation being take away by MPUSD. Marina however has to pay for referee and that is more expensive than taking a bus ride away and back. The gate fees collected at the entrance will help offset these costs. The concessions stands sponsored by the Football team will help with student and parent expenses. Please join us Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm. Enjoy the day outdoors with family and friends. Watch the game, buy a soda and chips. Support our Team! Support your Community!!!

Marina High School PTSA needs your help!!! We are selling trees from Laguna Sea. They are $30 for the smaller trees and $40 for the larger. We also have an Avon Fund raiser. If you haven’t already seen these special value priced products ask your student to bring home a flyer. They will make great gifts. The holidays are right around the corner. Before you know it they will be here and you will need a gift (or just treat yourself (that’s what I do…shh). This money goes to support all events and activities at Marina High School. Our membership drive is also underway. Our school has been recognized by the District with the highest membership percentile. We want to keep that going. All students have been given membership envelope. If you did not get one please call Marina High. We are have our own membership drive at school. The class with the highest percentile membership wins an Ice Cream party sponsored by the PTSA. So from the Seniors…It on!!!

Special Announcement to all Seniors and Parents...Senior Night September 17, at Marina High School. It is very important that all of us attend. A list of all our expenses for this years will be presented as well as other pertinent information,

First Mate, Laura Alvarez
