IX BINATIONAL HEALTH WEEK MONTEREY COUNTY 2009
Annual Event Highlights Importance Of Promoting Health And Preventive Practices In the Migrant Community, October 3-28, 2009
Salinas, CA --- The Binational Health Partnership Monterey County, announced today the dates and activities for the IX Binational Health Week (BHW) in Monterey County.
BHW is celebrated with a series of health promotion activities for Mexican and other Latin American immigrants. This year, BHW will take place from the 3rd to the 28th of October with various health prevention activities including health fairs, health forums, providers round tables, workshops and trainings.
Monterey County health agencies, the Mexican consulate and the Health Initiative of the Americas, have thus created a local partnership the Binational Health Partnership, in order to promote the importance of health and preventative practices in the migrant community. In addition, local community-based organizations, health agencies, the Monterey County Health Department and local, state and national agencies will collaborate in presenting the 2009 BHW health events in Monterey County.
EVENTS
Health education and promotion events will take place throughout Monterey County. ALL EVENTS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Some of the activities are:
Inaugural Event A Kick-Off event will be held at the National Steinbeck Center on October 9th. Medical experts will speak on immigration and health in the Salinas Valley. Proclamations in support of BHW will be presented by local and state elected officials. Also featured: an art exhibit, music and featured speakers.
Health Fairs These activities will include interactive activities in promoting health education and preventive practices in Salinas and Gonzales.
Mobile Clinics Optometry, dental and general preventative care will be made available to event attendees and walk-ins, on a sliding-scale availability basis.
Parent Conferences Topics will focus on child development and learning disabilities for migrant parents.
