Back at school again…and the beginning of a new adventure!

Ahoy Mariner Fans! Back at school again…and the beginning of a new adventure! It was a beautiful day. After rolling out of bed and faking illness (to which my mother replied, "Save it for later.") I have to admit I had a great time. I do enjoy school breaks but I also enjoy being back with friends old and new. There were so many new faces. Just about five hundred students attended the first day at Marina High School. Since orientation and schedules were handed out the week before we knew where to go when the bell rang. Well, some of us…there were a few snags and a few students had to sign up for schedule changes to be worked out by the Counselors and Registrar. My new school bag in one hand and my coffee in the other I was ready!

Over the summer the ASB (Associated Student Body) officers met once a month and began collaborating and planning events for our new school year. The elections were held at the end of last semester before the summer break. Our new officers are as follows with some positions yet to be announced (TBA):

The Fall Sports Season is here! We are hoping that many of you Mariners, Mariner parents and fans will come out and support our teams. We take great pride in representing not only our school but also the City of Marina. Our coaches, teachers and staff make sure we meet the required grade point average of 2.0 in order to participate. After school practice, homework and responsibilities to family and community make it challenging, but we are Mariners, We Make It Happen!!!

Marina High School Cross Country Team will be coached by the famous, Mr. Silva! The schedule will be as follows:

September 12, Saturday – Stevenson School Invitational (non league) at 9:00am

September 17, Thursday – League Meet @ Gavilan College, 3:30pm

September 24, Thursday - MTAL Center Meet @ Toro Park, 4:00pm

Marina High School Football Team will be coached by John Montante. The schedule will be as follows and all the games played on our home football field at MHS:

September 5, Saturday @ 1:00pm – Marina vs. Calvary Christian H.S. (scrimmage)

September 12, Saturday @ 1:00pm- Marina vs. Valley Christian Academy

September 26, Saturday @ 1:00pm – Marina vs. Pacific Lutheran

Unfortunately, due to the many budget cuts of the MPUSD we currently have no funding for the Volleyball Teams. The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District has announced more budget cuts. As you know they didn’t just layoff teachers and staff. There is no transportation provided for sports teams to or from their games. Teams will be relying on parents and coaches to get to their games and meets. Some students don’t even have transportation to school. On our way to school we see parades of parents and younger students walking longer distances than normal to get to school in Marina. Those of us who have regular rides are okay, but what will happen when the weather gets bad?

At Marina High School our PTSA is in full fund raising and recruitment mode! We need your support. Every student has been given a membership envelope and we hope all parents will consider participating in our events and be a part of our Mariner family. We need volunteers to help at every event and your time and talents are appreciated. Speaking of fundraising out PTSA members have just brought in a fresh crop of trees from the races at Laguna Seca. Come by and see how beautifully they can decorate your yards and gardens. These trees are $30 for the smaller trees and $40 dollars for the larger tress. They can make great gifts for housewarming, birthdays and anniversaries. Who wouldn’t love to have a tree planted in their honor?! Please call Marina High School at (831) 583-2070.

Don’t forget…

August 19, Wednesday – Picture Day

August 20, Thursday, 6:00pm– Back to School Night

August 21, Friday, 7-10:00pm– Back to School Dance

First Mate, Laura Alvarez

Sailing off for now… Go Mariners!!!
